Impact of Saharan dust outbreaks on short‐range weather forecast errors in Europe

AbstractMineral dust, the most abundant atmospheric aerosol by mass, interacts with radiation directly and alters cloud properties indirectly. Many operational numerical weather prediction models account for aerosol direct effects by using climatological mean concentrations and neglect indirect effects. This simplification may lead to shortcomings in model forecasts during outbreaks of Saharan dust towards Europe, when climatological mean dust concentrations deviate strongly from actual concentrations. This study investigates errors in model analyses and short‐range forecasts during such events. We investigate a pronounced dust event in March 2021 using the pre‐operational ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic weather and climate model with Aerosols and Reactive Trace gases (ICON‐ART) with prognostic calculation of dust and the operational European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) model, which deploys a dust climatology. We compare model analysis and forecast with measurements from satellite and in situ instruments. We find that inclusion of prognostic aerosol and direct radiative effects from dust improves forecasts of surface radiation during clear‐sky conditions. However, dust‐induced cirrus clouds are strongly underestimated, highlighting the importance of representing indirect effects adequately. These findings are corroborated by systematic quantification of forecast errors against satellite measurements. For this we construct an event catalogue with 49 dust days over Central Europe between January 2018 and March 2022. We classify model cells by simulated and observed cloudiness and simulated dustiness in the total atmospheric column. We find significant overestimations of brightness temperature for cases with dust compared with cases without dust. For surface shortwave radiation, we find median overestimations of 6.2% during cloudy conditions with dust optical depth greater than 0.1, however these are not significant compared with cloudy conditions without dust. Our findings show that the pre‐operational ICON‐ART and the operational IFS model still do not reproduce cloudiness adequately during events with Saharan dust over Central Europe. Missing implementations of prognostic dust, particularly of indirect effects on cloud formation, lead to significant underestimations of cloudiness and potentially overestimations of surface radiation.

Deep learning model for heavy rainfall nowcasting in South Korea

Accurate nowcasting is critical for preemptive action in response to heavy rainfall events (HREs). However, operational numerical weather prediction models have difficulty predicting HREs in the short term, especially for rapidly and sporadically developing cases. Here, we present multi-year evaluation statistics showing that deep-learning-based HRE nowcasting, trained with radar images and ground measurements, outperforms short-term numerical weather prediction at lead times of up to 6 h. The deep learning nowcasting shows an improved accuracy of 162%–31% over numerical prediction, at the 1-h to 6-h lead times, for predicting HREs in South Korea during the Asian summer monsoon. The spatial distribution and diurnal cycle of HREs are also well predicted. Isolated HRE predictions in the late afternoon to early evening which mostly result from convective processes associated with surface heating are particularly useful. This result suggests that the deep learning algorithm may be available for HRE nowcasting, potentially serving as an alternative to the operational numerical weather prediction model.

Evaluation of surface shortwave downward radiation forecasts by the numerical weather prediction model AROME

Abstract. With the worldwide development of the solar energy sector, the need for reliable surface shortwave downward radiation (SWD) forecasts has significantly increased in recent years. SWD forecasts of a few hours to a few days based on numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are essential to facilitate the incorporation of solar energy into the electric grid and ensure network stability. However, SWD errors in NWP models can be substantial. In order to characterize the performances of AROME in detail, the operational NWP model of the French weather service Météo-France, a full year of hourly AROME forecasts is compared to corresponding in situ SWD measurements from 168 high-quality pyranometers covering France. In addition, to classify cloud scenes at high temporal frequency and over the whole territory, cloud products derived from the Satellite Application Facility for Nowcasting and Very Short Range Forecasting (SAF NWC) from geostationary satellites are also used. The 2020 mean bias is positive, with a value of 18 W m−2, meaning that AROME on average overestimates the SWD. The root-mean-square error is 98 W m−2. The situations that contribute the most to the bias correspond to cloudy skies in the model and in the observations, situations that are very frequent (66 %) and characterized by an annual bias of 24 W m−2. Part of this positive bias probably comes from an underestimation of cloud fraction in AROME, although this is not fully addressed in this study due to the lack of consistent observations at kilometer resolution. The other situations have less impact on SWD errors. Missed cloudy situations and erroneously predicted clouds, which generally correspond to clouds with a low impact on the SWD, also have low occurrence (4 % and 11 %). Likewise, well-predicted clear-sky conditions are characterized by a low bias (3 W m−2). When limited to overcast situations in the model, the bias in cloudy skies is small (1 W m−2) but results from large compensating errors. Indeed, further investigation shows that high clouds are systematically associated with a SWD positive bias, while low clouds are associated with a negative bias. This detailed analysis shows that the errors result from a combination of incorrect cloud optical properties and cloud fraction errors, highlighting the need for a more detailed evaluation of cloud properties. This study also provides valuable insights into the potential improvement of AROME physical parametrizations.

The impact of aerosol-cloud interaction on mesoscale numerical weather prediction when low-cloud and haze coexist in winter over major polluted regions of China

Compared with climate models, the role of aerosol-cloud interaction (ACI) in mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP) models still needs to be better understood, especially in haze regions with relatively high aerosol concentration. Here, we perform two sensitivity experiments with and without ACI (ACI and NO-ACI) in the atmospheric chemistry model GRAPES_Meso5.1/CUACE to investigate the impact of ACI on mesoscale NWP during the low-cloud period in winter 2016 over varying haze regions (severe polluted Jing-Jin-Ji (JJJ), polluted Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and weak polluted Pearl River Delta (PRD)) in China. The study results show that the real-time ACI improves underestimated cloud optical thickness (COT) and cloud water liquid path (CLWP) in haze regions, with the mean bias of simulated COT (CLWP) decreased by 27% (3%), 60% (14%), and 55% (3%) in JJJ, YRD, and PRD, respectively. The increased COT and CLWP lead to a decrease of 6.8, 21, and 13 W m−2 in daytime surface downward shortwave radiation (SDSR) in JJJ, YRD, and PRD, helping to reduce the mean bias of daytime SDSR by 6%, 13%, and 9%. In addition, ACI mitigates the warm bias of temperature at 2 m and dry bias of relative humidity (RH) at 2 m to a certain extent in haze regions, particularly in YRD with the mean absolute bias improved by 13% and 6%. The simulated vertical structure of temperature and RH in the ACI experiment is more consistent with observations than in the NO-ACI experiment. Further investigations find that the ACI effects on mesoscale NWP strongly depend on COT and CLWP magnitude over varying haze regions. Higher COT and CLWP, hence more significant meteorology changes due to ACI, occur in YRD, followed by PRD and JJJ. This study demonstrates the importance and complexity of ACI in modifying mesoscale NWP over varying haze regions of China, which promotes the further understanding of ACI in operational NWP models and bridges the gap with climate models.

Impacts of Dropsonde Observations on Forecasts of Atmospheric Rivers and Associated Precipitation in the NCEP GFS and ECMWF IFS Models

Abstract Atmospheric River Reconnaissance has held field campaigns during cool seasons since 2016. These campaigns have provided thousands of dropsonde data profiles, which are assimilated into multiple global operational numerical weather prediction models. Data denial experiments, conducted by running a parallel set of forecasts that exclude the dropsonde information, allow testing of the impact of the dropsonde data on model analyses and the subsequent forecasts. Here, we investigate the differences in skill between the control forecasts (with dropsonde data assimilated) and denial forecasts (without dropsonde data assimilated) in terms of both precipitation and integrated vapor transport (IVT) at multiple thresholds. The differences are considered in the times and locations where there is a reasonable expectation of influence of an intensive observation period (IOP). Results for 2019 and 2020 from both the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) global model show improvements with the added information from the dropsondes. In particular, significant improvements in the control forecast IVT generally occur in both models, especially at higher values. Significant improvements in the control forecast precipitation also generally occur in both models, but the improvements vary depending on the lead time and metrics used. Significance Statement Atmospheric River Reconnaissance is a program that uses targeted aircraft flights over the northeast Pacific to take measurements of meteorological fields. These data are then ingested into global weather models with the intent of improving the initial conditions and resulting forecasts along the U.S. West Coast. The impacts of these observations on two global numerical weather models were investigated to determine their influence on the forecasts. The integrated vapor transport, a measure of both wind and humidity, saw significant improvements in both models with the additional observations. Precipitation forecasts were also improved, but with differing results between the two models.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast of Landfalling Tropical Cyclone Over China With an Upgraded DSAEF_LTP Model

AbstractSince the release of the Dynamical‐Statistical‐Analog Ensemble Forecast for Landfalling Typhoon Precipitation (DSAEF_LTP) model, a series of upgrades has been made to improve its heavy rainfall forecast performance for different cases and regions of China. However, little effort has been given to systematic evaluation of its multi‐upgraded version with a large sample size, especially for all the coastal regions of China. This study evaluates the performance of Version 1.0 (V1.0) and its improved Version 1.1 (V1.1) of the DSAEF_LTP model in simulating heavy rainfall amounts associated with 76 landfalling tropical cyclones (LTCs) over China during 2004–2016. The optimized schemes from these simulations are then applied to the heavy rainfall forecasts of 37 LTCs during 2017–2020. To further improve the forecast performance of V1.1, a subregional re‐ensemble scheme, referred to as V1.1R, is introduced after examining its performances over three coastal subregions of China. A comparison of the forecast performances of V1.0, V1.1, V1.1R, and four operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) models for the 37 LTCs shows that the performance of V1.1 is much better than that of V1.0, with a 65% higher summed threat score (TS) for over 250‐mm (TS250) and 100‐mm (TS100) rainfall; and that V1.1R's TS100 and TS250 values are further improved by 8% and 20%, respectively, as compared to V1.1. These values are superior to those of the four operational NWP models. Additionally, case studies reveal that the track distributions and intensities of LTCs may significantly impact the forecast performance of heavy rainfall.

Predictability of Coastal Boundary Layer Jets in South China Using Atmosphere–Ocean Coupling

AbstractMost standalone atmospheric models do not perform well in simulations of coastal boundary layer jets (BLJs), important weather processes that can trigger heavy rain in coastal areas by supplying both moisture and dynamic lifting. We compared 33‐year simulations with a coupled atmosphere–ocean model and its standalone atmospheric component, the REgional atmosphere MOdel (REMO), forced by the prescribed sea surface temperature (SST). We validated our results using the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission SST and the ERA5 hourly reanalysis data set. We found that the coupled model gave a more realistic SST standard deviation than the REMO on BLJ days and corrected the overestimated air temperature over land during the day. The coupled atmosphere–ocean model showed a lower land–sea thermal contrast in the boundary layer. This increased the effects of inertial oscillation, which caused the ageostrophic flows to veer southwest, which is the direction of the maximum wind speed on BLJ days. This reproduced a more reasonable land–sea thermal contrast in the boundary layer as a result of strong air–sea mixing in coastal weather processes, which led to a more robust inertial oscillation and a larger SST standard deviation over the central South China Sea. These findings deepen our understanding of the influence of a fully mixed air–sea boundary on coastal weather processes. These results show that operational numerical weather prediction models can be improved by applying atmosphere–ocean coupling to advance their ability to forecast the weather (e.g., BLJ events) in coastal areas.

Adaptive tuning of uncertain parameters in a numerical weather prediction model based upon data assimilation

AbstractIn numerical weather prediction models, near‐surface quantities like 10‐m wind speed (FF10M) or 2‐m temperature (T2M) tend to exhibit significantly larger forecast errors than the related variables in the free troposphere. Besides representativeness issues of surface stations, this is primarily related to parametrization errors and insufficient knowledge of relevant physical properties of the soil and the surface layer. For instance, the vegetation roughness length is usually derived from land‐cover classifications that may contain errors and reflect only part of the natural variability. This article describes a methodology implemented into Deutscher Wetterdienst's operational numerical weather prediction model ICON in order to improve the estimate of such parameters by using information from the data assimilation system. Building upon the condition that FF10M, T2M, and 2‐m relative humidity are assimilated, time‐filtered assimilation increments are calculated for the respective fields at the lowest model level. These are taken as proxies for the related model biases. For T2M, an additional weighted increment field is computed that indicates the model bias in the diurnal temperature amplitude. Based on these increment fields, several physical parameter fields and a few model tuning parameters are varied around their base values. This adaptive parameter adjustment is used operationally in the global and regional forecasting systems of Deutscher Wetterdienst. The ensuing reduction of the FF10M, T2M, and 2‐m relative humidity errors typically lies on the order of 5% on a hemispheric average but has substantial regional and seasonal variability that depends on the original magnitude of the model error. A weaker but still statistically significant positive impact is seen in the radiosonde verification of wind speed, humidity, and temperature in the lower troposphere, giving confidence that the adaptive tuning indeed reduces model errors rather than pushing the model towards unrepresentative station observations.

A Study on the Influence of Air Pollution on Temperature Forecast Skill Based on Operational Weather Forecast in BTH Region

Surface air temperature is a comprehensive function of aerosols in the atmosphere and various weather factors. However, there is no real-time aerosol concentration feedback in most operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. This raises a scientific question of how abnormal changes in air pollutants in a short period of time will affect the temperature prediction skill of NWP models. Thus, the study was carried out to investigate the possible influence of air pollution on the temperature forecast skill based on the operational NWP model over the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region during January–February 2020. The results show that the average concentrations of PM2.5, SO2, NO2 and CO over the BTH region in February were smaller than those in January by 38.5%, 35.1%, 48.0% and 33.1%, respectively. Simultaneously, the forecast skills for surface temperature in February from both regional (RMAPS, Rapid-refresh Multi-scale Analysis and Prediction System) and global (ECMWF, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) operational NWP models improved markedly compared with that in January. In both models, the underestimation of maximum temperature and the overestimation of minimum temperature in most cities over the BTH region in February were significantly reduced. With the 24 h (24 h) forecast lead time, the RMSE (root mean square error) of BTH daily mean, maximum and minimum temperature prediction in February based on RMAPS were 17.3%, 9.8% and 21.6% lower than that in January, respectively. These are generally consistent with the other statistical indices such as deviation and regression coefficient. As the forecast lead time extended to 48 h and 72 h forecast, the phenomena still existed and were also evident in the ECMWF model. The improvement of temperature forecast skill of NWP models may be attributed to the unexpected dramatical reduction of air pollutants. Less aerosols during the daytime allow more solar radiation reaching the surface and cause a warming in the near-surface temperature, while less aerosols during the nighttime favor the outgoing long-wave radiation and then lead to a cooling near the ground.

Characteristics of Diagnostics for Identifying Elevated Convection over the British Isles in a Convection-Allowing Model

Abstract Identifying modes of convection can be useful in both forecasting and research. For example, it allows for potentially different impacts to be determined in forecasting contexts and stratification of model behavior in research contexts. One area where identification could be particularly beneficial is elevated convection. Elevated convection is not routinely examined (outside of an operational environment) within a physical-process perspective in operational numerical weather prediction model evaluation or verification. Using convection-allowing model (CAM) output the characteristics of four elevated convection diagnostics [based on boundary layer, convective available potential energy (CAPE) ratios, downdraft, and inflow layer properties] are examined in operational forecasts during the U.K. Testbed Summer 2021 run at the Met Office. A survey of the practical use of these diagnostics in a simulated operational environment revealed that diagnostics based on CAPE ratios and inflow layer properties were preferred. These diagnostics were the smoothest varying in both space and time. Treating the CAPE ratio and downdraft properties diagnostics as proxies for updrafts and downdrafts, respectively, showed that updrafts were slightly more likely to be resolved than downdrafts. However, a substantial proportion of both are unresolved in current CAMs. Filtering the CAPE ratios by the inflow layer properties led to improved spatial and temporal characteristics, and thus indicates a potentially useful diagnostic for both research and forecasting. Significance Statement Understanding diagnostics is important to be able to analyze model data. Four diagnostics to identify elevated convection are characterized from kilometer-scale operational forecasts. Diagnosing elevated convection from model data is important as these events are often associated with impactful forecast busts. Therefore, being able to identify how the model is representing these events could lead to model improvements. Two diagnostics were deemed to be of practical use based on current kilometer-scale forecasts: convective available potential energy ratios and inflow layer properties. These diagnostics varied smoothly in space and time. The two diagnostics were combined to produce a filtered diagnostic that could be useful in both research and operations.

Regime‐Specific Cloud Vertical Overlap Characteristics From Radar and Lidar Observations at the ARM Sites

AbstractClimate and numerical weather prediction models require assumptions to represent the vertical distribution of subgrid‐scale clouds, which have radiative transfer implications. In this study, nearly 25 years of ground‐based radar and lidar observations of vertical cloud profiles at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) site are utilized to derive cloud vertical overlap characteristics from the Cloud Type (CLDTYPE) data product. The cloud vertical overlap characteristics are further separated by cloud regime by considering seven cloud types (i.e., low cloud, congestus, deep convection, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrostratus, and cirrus) as well as periods of shallow cumulus. The decorrelation length scale (i.e., exponential transition from maximum to random overlap with layer separation) is found to vary by cloud regime, ranging between 0.04 km for cirrostratus paired with cirrus to 4.58 km for low cloud paired with cirrus at SGP. Cloud vertical overlap characteristics are also considered for other ARM sites including the Tropical Western Pacific (TWP), North Slope of Alaska (NSA), and Eastern North Atlantic (ENA) sites among other shorter term ARM deployments globally. The decorrelation length scale ranged globally from 1.03 km in the Arctic Ocean to 3.06 km in Manacapuru, Brazil. Globally, the decorrelation length scale by cloud regime exhibited similarities (e.g., for cirrus paired with cirrus) and differences (e.g., congestus paired with cirrus). The results could help inform development of cloud vertical overlap assumptions within operational numerical weather prediction models and potentially improve prediction of radiative fluxes for weather, climate, and renewable energy forecasting.

Prediction of the Diurnal Variation of Summertime Precipitation Over the Sichuan Basin by a Regional Model

AbstractThe nocturnal precipitation over the Sichuan Basin (SCB) exhibits obvious spatial variation, most of the existing numerical research of precipitation event over the SCB is based on case studies. In this study, the long‐term climatological evaluation of the prediction of diurnal spatio‐temporal evolution of precipitation and relevant physical mechanism over the SCB by 9 and 3 km operational numerical weather prediction model is carried out. It is found that the SWC‐WARMS model with 9 km grid spacing overestimates the summer precipitation, especially over the western slopes of the SCB. The northeastward timing delay of the precipitation peak over the SCB is well reproduced in the model, with predicted precipitation peaking at midnight over the southwestern SCB and in the early morning over the northeastern SCB. However, the predicted diurnal peak of precipitation appears 2–3 hr earlier than the observed peak. Increasing horizontal resolution to 3 km reduces the wet bias and improves the diurnal phase of precipitation. Compared to reanalysis, the predicted easterly anomalous wind appears earlier and the anomalous wind speed is stronger. Moreover, the predicted atmosphere is too unstable, which is associated with “warm below and cold above” vertical biases in temperature and wet biases in specific humidity. Thus, model precipitation peaks too early in the day over the SCB, and is overestimated. The weakening of the predicted southwesterly flow in the middle troposphere weakens the northeastward propagation of precipitation after midnight over the SCB. The most significant improvements are found for the diurnal variation of low‐level anomalous wind speed in the 3 km resolution model, contributing to a more realistic representation of precipitation over the SCB.

A modified deep learning weather prediction using cubed sphere for global precipitation

Deep learning (DL), a potent technology to develop Digital Twin (DT), for weather prediction using cubed spheres (DLWP-CS) was recently proposed to facilitate data-driven simulations of global weather fields. DLWP-CS is a temporal mapping algorithm wherein time-stepping is performed through U-NET. Although DLWP-CS has shown impressive results for fields, such as temperature and geopotential height, this technique is complicated and computationally challenging for a complex, non-linear field, such as precipitation, which depends on other prognostic environmental co-variables. To address this challenge, we modify the DLWP-CS and call our technique “modified DLWP-CS” (MDLWP-CS). In this study, we transform the architecture from a temporal to a spatio-temporal mapping (multivariate setup), wherein precursor(s) of precipitation can be used as input. As a proof of concept, as a first simple case, a 2-m surface air temperature is used to predict precipitation using MDLWP-CS. The model is trained using hourly ERA-5 reanalysis and the resulting experimental findings are compared to two benchmark models, viz, the linear regression and an operational numerical weather prediction model, which is the Global Forecast System (GFS). The fidelity of MDLWP-CS is much better compared to linear regression and the results are equivalent to GFS output in terms of daily precipitation prediction with 1 day lag. These results provide an encouraging framework for an efficient DT that can facilitate speedy, high fidelity precipitation predictions.

Verification of operational numerical weather prediction model forecasts of precipitation using satellite rainfall estimates over Africa

AbstractRainfall is an important variable to be able to monitor and forecast across Africa, due to its impact on agriculture, food security, climate‐related diseases and public health. Numerical weather models (NWMs) are an important component of this work, due to their complete spatial coverage, high resolution and ability to forecast into the future. In this study, the spatio‐temporal skill of short‐term forecasts of rainfall across Africa from 2016 through 2018 is evaluated. Specifically, the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction‐Global Forecast System (NCEP‐GFS) forecast models are verified by Rainfall Estimates 2.0 (RFE2) and African Rainfall Climatology Version 2 (ARC2), which are fused products of satellite and in situ observations and are commonly used in analysis of African rainfall. Model rainfall forecasts show good consistency with the satellite rainfall observations in spatial distribution over Africa on the seasonal timescale. Evaluation metrics of daily and weekly forecasts show high spatial and seasonal variations over the African continent, including a strong link to the location of the inter‐tropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and topographically enhanced precipitation. The rainfall forecasts at 1 week aggregation time are improved against daily forecasts.

Chemistry‐Weather Interacted Model System GRAPES_Meso5.1/CUACE CW V1.0: Development, Evaluation and Application in Better Haze/Fog Prediction in China

AbstractThe Chinese Meteorology Administration chemistry model Chinese Unified Atmospheric Chemistry Environment (CUACE) is online integrated into the mesoscale operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) model (GRAPES_Meso5.1) and aerosol‐cloud‐radiation interaction is achieved to establish the first version (V1) of chemistry‐weather (CW) interacted model GRAPES‐Meso5.1/CUACE CW V1. The most polluted winter 2016–2017 is selected to study the meteorology impacts on haze/fog prediction, the impact of aerosol‐radiation, aerosol‐cloud and CW interaction (ARI, ACI, CWI) on haze/fog prediction and NWP. Single way model without CWI displays reasonable PM2.5 and visibility prediction in general. However, modeled PM2.5 peaks are underestimated and visibility valleys are overestimated during haze/fog pollution, the underestimation of relative humidity (RH) contributes major to this misestimation; CWI model cut the negative bias of PM2.5 peaks and the positive bias of visibility valleys. The improvement of 5 and 3 km low visibility by CWI during severe haze/fog period is more obvious than that of 10 km, which just compensates for the largest deficiency in low visibility prediction related with severe haze/fog by single way model; The NWP including sea level pressures, RH, temperature, wind speed are also improved by CWI from surface to upper troposphere; ARI contributes larger to the predicted PM2.5,visibility and NWP improvement than that of ACI, their relative contributions varies with model vertical height and the overlapping condition of cloud and aerosols. Due to the joint contribution of RH and PM2.5, CWI's improving on visibility is larger than PM2.5. This study illustrates the importance of including CWI in air quality prediction model.

Downscaling of Historical Wind Fields over Switzerland Using Generative Adversarial Networks

Abstract Near-surface wind is difficult to estimate using global numerical weather and climate models, because airflow is strongly modified by underlying topography, especially that of a country such as Switzerland. In this article, we use a statistical approach based on deep learning and a high-resolution digital elevation model to spatially downscale hourly near-surface wind fields at coarse resolution from ERA5 reanalysis from their original 25-km grid to a 1.1-km grid. A 1.1-km-resolution wind dataset for 2016–20 from the operational numerical weather prediction model COSMO-1 of the national weather service MeteoSwiss is used to train and validate our model, a generative adversarial network (GAN) with gradient penalized Wasserstein loss aided by transfer learning. The results are realistic-looking high-resolution historical maps of gridded hourly wind fields over Switzerland and very good and robust predictions of the aggregated wind speed distribution. Regionally averaged image-specific metrics show a clear improvement in prediction relative to ERA5, with skill measures generally better for locations over the flatter Swiss Plateau than for Alpine regions. The downscaled wind fields demonstrate higher-resolution, physically plausible orographic effects, such as ridge acceleration and sheltering, that are not resolved in the original ERA5 fields. Significance Statement Statistical downscaling, which increases the resolution of atmospheric fields, is widely used to refine the outputs of global reanalysis and climate models, most commonly for temperature and precipitation. Near-surface winds are strongly modified by the underlying topography, generating local flow conditions that can be very difficult to estimate. This study develops a deep learning model that uses local topographic information to spatially downscale hourly near-surface winds from their original 25-km resolution to a 1.1-km grid over Switzerland. Our model produces realistic high-resolution gridded wind fields with expected orographic effects but performs better in flatter regions than in mountains. These downscaled fields are useful for impact assessment and decision-making in regions where global reanalysis data at coarse resolution may be the only products available.

Global Distributions of Tropospheric and Stratospheric Gravity Wave Momentum Fluxes Resolved by the 9-km ECMWF Experiments

Abstract Based on 20-day control forecasts by the 9-km Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) for selected periods of summer and winter events, this study investigates global distributions of gravity wave momentum fluxes resolved by the highest-resolution-ever global operational numerical weather prediction model. Two supplementary datasets, including 18-km ECMWF IFS experiments and the 30-km ERA5, are included for comparison. In the stratosphere, there is a clear dominance of westward momentum fluxes over the winter extratropics with strong baroclinic instability, while eastward momentum fluxes are found in the summer tropics. However, meridional momentum fluxes, locally as important as the above zonal counterpart, show different behaviors of global distribution characteristics, with northward and southward momentum fluxes alternating with each other especially at lower altitudes. Both events illustrate conclusive evidence that stronger stratospheric fluxes are found in the ECMWF forecast with finer resolution, and that ERA5 datasets have the weakest signals in general, regardless of whether regridding is applied. In the troposphere, probability distributions of vertical motion perturbations are highly asymmetric with more strong positive signals especially over latitudes covering heavy rainfall, likely caused by convective forcing. With the aid of precipitation accumulation, a simple filtering method is proposed in an attempt to eliminate those tropospheric asymmetries by convective forcing, before calculating tropospheric wave-induced fluxes. Furthermore, this research demonstrates promising findings that the proposed filtering method could help in reducing the potential uncertainties with respect to estimating tropospheric wave-induced fluxes. Finally, absolute momentum flux distributions with proposed approaches are presented, for further assessment in the future.

Spatial prediction of outdoor thermal comfort using an operational NWP model for city and regional scales: A case study in Korea

The outdoor thermal environment has key implications for human health, and numerical simulation models have been used to predict thermal comfort. The potential of a numerical weather prediction (NWP)-based thermal environment prediction model has not yet been comprehensively explored. Using a predicted mean vote-based thermal comfort index (i.e., perceived temperature [PT]) in South Korea, this study developed and evaluated a thermal environment prediction model using an operational NWP model of the Korea Meteorological Administration. The suitability of four bias-adjustment methods to reduce bias in PT prediction was examined, applying the outputs of the NWP model using in-situ data for 2018–2019. Bias-adjusted PT prediction performance was assessed for 2020 based on PT and thermo-physiological stress categories for South Korea. The predicted PT successfully represented PT spatial information. Mean absolute errors (MAEs) were 2.17 and 1.15 °C for hourly and daily PT, and the bias-adjustment method improved prediction accuracy by 18 and 36%, respectively, based on the MAE. PT prediction via NWP modeling can be further improved by reducing the statistical error in surface solar radiation modeling. The proposed scheme can be applied in urban heat mitigation, developing early warning systems for thermal health risks, energy consumption prediction, and tourism planning.

Diagnostics of Tropical Variability for Numerical Weather Forecasts

Abstract Tropical precipitation and circulation are often coupled and span a vast spectrum of scales from a few to several thousands of kilometers and from hours to weeks. Current operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) models struggle with representing the full range of scales of tropical phenomena. Synoptic to planetary scales are of particular importance because improved skill in the representation of tropical larger-scale features such as convectively coupled equatorial waves (CCEWs) has the potential to reduce forecast error propagation from the tropics to the midlatitudes. Here we introduce diagnostics from a recently developed tropical variability diagnostics toolbox, where we focus on two recent versions of NOAA’s Unified Forecast System (UFS): operational GFSv15 forecasts and experimental GFSv16 forecasts from April to October 2020. The diagnostics include space–time coherence spectra to identify preferred scales of coupling between circulation and precipitation, pattern correlations of Hovmöller diagrams to assess model skill in zonal propagation of precipitating features, CCEW skill assessment, plus a diagnostic aimed at evaluating moisture–convection coupling in the tropics. Results show that the GFSv16 forecasts are slightly more realistic than GFSv15 in their coherence between precipitation and model dynamics at synoptic to planetary scales, with modest improvements in moisture convection coupling. However, this slightly improved performance does not necessarily translate to improvements in traditional precipitation skill scores. The results highlight the utility of these diagnostics in the pursuit of better understanding of NWP model performance in the tropics, while also demonstrating the challenges in translating model advancements into improved skill.

Statistical Evaluation of the Temperature Forecast Error in the Lower‐Level Troposphere on Short‐Range Timescales Induced by Aerosol Variability

AbstractThis study statistically evaluated the aerosol impact on the temperature error in the lower‐level troposphere in short‐range numerical weather prediction (NWP). The Global Ensemble Forecast System version 12 (GEFSv12) reforecast exhibited large‐temperature errors in high‐loading areas (North India, Africa, South America, and China). In 1‐day GEFSv12 forecasts, the largest average temperature error occurred in the aerosol optical depth (AOD) peak month, and the daily error distribution corresponded to the daily AOD distribution. Even though the temperature error in the 1‐day operational forecasts was smaller than that in the GEFSv12 forecasts, the forecast uncertainties in the operational forecasts were comparable to those in 3‐day GEFSv12 forecasts over high‐loading areas. The daily temperature errors in all NWP models exhibited a correlation coefficient of ∼0.5–0.6 for the AOD over Central Africa and northern South America and ∼0.3–0.6 for AOD anomalies over China and northern South America. These results indicated that the interannual aerosol variability contributed 25–36% to errors, and the daily variability contributed 10%–36% to temperature errors in 3‐day forecasts. Although the correlation was low, aerosol impacts also emerged in North India and Central Africa. Partial correlation and composite analysis suggested that the direct effect mainly influenced temperature forecast errors over northern South America, whereas both direct and indirect effects influenced temperature errors over China. Model intercomparison revealed that operational NWP models could experience common forecast errors associated with aerosols in high‐loading areas.
